Beekeeping 101: An Introduction to Honeybees and Beekeeping

Curious about beekeeping, but not ready to commit? Have you ever wondered what beekeeping is really like, but felt hesitant because of the time, cost, or commitment involved? This class is designed exactly for you. Beekeeping 101 offers a hands-on, approachable introduction to honeybees and hive care, without the pressure of becoming an expert or starting your own hive. It’s a chance to get a real taste of beekeeping: learn the basics, ask questions, and experience working with live bees in a guided, supportive environment. Whether you’re exploring a new interest, considering beekeeping in the future, or simply fascinated by bees, this class gives you the knowledge and confidence to understand what beekeeping truly involves.

Beginner Macro Photography

*This class is geared towards adults but is suitable for 16+ with a parent in attendance*

Whether you’re a paparazzi or can’t figure out your camera or phone, join expert photographer Bob Krugmire for hands-on instruction that will teach you to maximize the potential of your camera! Leave with better skills, knowledge, and tons of fantastic close-up shots. Space is limited! Pre-registration and pre-payment are required.

Experience a rejuvenating yoga class in our tropical rainforest. Led by one of our rotating instructors, classes provide an amazing opportunity to transcend the hustle and bustle of daily life as you practice amongst the butterflies in our conservatory.

February 10, 2026: Ecosystems

Join us as we explore the interconnected networks of plants and animals that sustain life on our planet. We'll examine the diverse ecosystems found around the world, how invertebrates support our natural habitats, and how we can support them in turn.

March 11, 2026: Baby Bugs

Baby animals are the cutest, and baby bugs are no exception! Join us as we examine the unique life cycles of insects, arachnids, and more through classes, activities, and crafts. We'll also look at baby pics of some of our favorite Butterfly Pavilion residents!

April 15, 2026: Conservation in Action

Conservation is a big topic but even the smallest actions can help our natural world! We'll explore different conservation initiatives that Butterfly Pavilion is leading and strategies anyone can implement to help protect our planet.

September 17, 2026: Backyard Buddies

Butterfly Pavilion showcases amazing invertebrates from all over the planet, but there are also plenty of awesome animals to be found in our own backyards! We'll explore our state's incredible biodiversity and learn more about the invertebrates that call Colorado home through classes, activities, and crafts.

October 15, 2026: Masters of Disguise

Many invertebrates utilize camouflage to help them survive, making them the ultimate masters of disguise! We will explore how different colors, patterns, and behaviors help invertebrates survive and thrive through classes, activities, and crafts.

November 12, 2026: Adaptations are the ultimate secret to survival!

Join us as we dive into the diverse world of invertebrate adaptations and learn how these unique animals survive in ecosystems all over the planet.

Native Bees of Colorado: Diversity, Ecology, and Identification

Colorado is home to around 1000 species of native bees, most of which live solitary lives and play critical roles in pollination and ecosystem health. This class introduces participants to the incredible diversity of Colorado’s native bees, their biology and life histories, and the habitats they depend on. Participants will gain hands-on experience collecting bees using nets, handling specimens responsibly, and learning basic identification techniques using microscopes.
